Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I've Never Read

For this week's Top Ten Tuesday, we got to pick a previous topic that we did not get to participate in. Since this is only my second time doing Top Ten Tuesday, I had a lot of great topics to choose from. I decided to post the ten books that I can't believe I've never read.

Let me just say that I *love* books, I really do; so try not to judge me for not having read these books. I went to high school in the Philippines, so I missed out on all the classics. All of these books are on my to-read list. I *will* get to these, I really will.

1. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee -Everyone loves it and It's an American classic. Even my husband, who rarely reads fiction, has read it. I'll get to it someday.
2. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne -Everytime someone makes a reference to Hester Prynne, I completely miss the point. This seems right up my alley, too.
3. Animal Farm by George Orwell -Again, the point of so many references in our culture, and I have no clue what people are talking about. I am very close to reading this one; it's on my bookshelf.
4. 1984 by George Orwell -I know, I know. Don't hate me. The godfather of all dystopian books. This list is very humbling.
5. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen -I tried; I really did. I just couldn't get through the first few chapters. That was a few years ago, so I'm going to give it another try very soon.
6. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley -Another dystopian classic that I've failed to read.
7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky -Seems like everyone who was once a teenager and claims to have loved books had the decency to read this. Again, don't hate me.
8. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley -Another classic that I missed out on because I moved to the Philippines.
9. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte -Yet another classic. I'm working my way there, though! I just finished Jane Eyre. This one is probably the next classic I'll read.
10. His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman -I started reading the first book for a children's literature class, but I didn't finish, only because I was so busy with all my other classes and this book was optional.

So there you have it. I have listed the books I haven't read, and in doing so I've probably committed book blogger suicide. I *will* read all of these one day, though. Really!

Love and (a book) light,

~Dorothy

  1. Hi. I'm visiting from Top Ten Tuesdays link up. You certainly have not committed blogger suicide :) I'm sure you've read many amazing novels that aren't well known in the States.

Wuthering Heights is a wonderful read. Hope you enjoy it!

  2. Great list! I was definitely surprised by my reaction after reading Frankenstein. Overall, I felt a little disappointed. That's not to say it wasn't a good book, but I think I was expecting more. For me, this was a case of Hollywood putting an certain image/idea in your head that doesn't match up with the source material.

  3. Have only read 2 & 5 from your list--I love Austen, so you should definitely read that! I've also wanted to read #10 for awhile now. Awesome picks!

  4. I haven't read many of these either. But what I can tell you is that To Kill a Mocking Bird and Frankenstein are two of my favorite books!

  6. Some real treasures on this list - but you MUST read the Orwell and soon. It's a quick read too, but more relevant than ever in some parts of the world.

  7. You've got some amazing books on this list - I hope you like them when you get around to them. "Mockingbird" might be a great place to start on your list; unlike some of the others it's easy stylistically and I think is a fun read. It falls in that weird place between young adult and adult fiction, but I guess it's been rescued from there by becoming a classic. I had vague memories of reading it from when I was a teen (I don't think I was too impressed with it), but when I reread it maybe a year and a half ago I loved it. It's definitely worth checking out when you find yourself not knowing what to read next.

I found my way here from Broke&Bookish and am so glad I did. I'm loving your posts, especially your throwback ones. Few things I like doing more than thinking about my favorite books from when I was growing up...as you can probably tell from this too-long comment.

  8. That's a fantastic list. Some great books on there. Hope you get round to reading them. You can't read everything though so the main thing is you enjoy the journey.

  12. Dorothy, I say don't worry about it. Life's too short. Read what you like. Of course I love PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, it's my all time favorite book. Also 1984 and BRAVE NEW WORLD, so that's easy for me to say. :)

  13. I've read about half of these. You're not alone--we've all got books we really should read, and haven't.

Just read your review of The Art of Racing in the Rain, and now I really want to read the book. :)

  14. No judgement here - I've only read 3 of the books on your list and a couple make my own 'Can't believe I haven't read these' list.

  15. Some of these books are among my favorites, although I will admit that many of them I only read because we had to for my AP English class. While I'm glad that I found them, I don't know how long it would have taken me to get around to reading them if it hadn't been for high school. You won't find me judging you, just telling you to get a move on and read them already. LOL

  16. I'm kind of proud of myself that I've read most of these. I have not read Wuthering Heights though, and it is on my list for this year.

    Here is my list

  17. Love this post! There are a few on this list that I haven't read either. If I sit here and think about the Perks of Being a Wallflower I will cry. I love that book so much. They are getting ready to make it into a movie with Emma Watson. If they mess it up I will be so mad! :)

  18. I also did attempt to read a Jane Austen book but I just failed miserably in that effort. And "Doods" you really should read His Dark Materials Trilogy. I LOVE that series so much that I got inspired to write something as epic as what Mr. Pullman has done. It'll take me long before I turn 25 though, the story is too much for me to finish as of the moment. Hehehehe I need to see the world first.
